Hardware [Internal & External]

CPU

CPU spacer

The CPU (Central processing unit) is the brain of the
computer and this is what performs all of the tasks such as: word, processing spreadsheets, games etc…

The CPU works by performing complicated mathematical
calculations. In a basic sense the faster your CPU is the
faster your computer will be.

Hard Disk

Hard Disk

The Hard Disk, or sometimes called Hard Drive, is the
digital equivalent of a filling cabinet because it is used to
save all the documents you create.

As well as documents the hard disk is also used to store
programs so that the files you can create can be edited.

Modem

Modem

A modem is a piece of hardware that is used to allow
access to the internet. Another name for a modem is a
modulator/demoulator.

A modem works by converting the analog signal from a
standard telephone connection to a digital signal so that it
can be used by the computer.

Motherboard

Motherboard

The motherboard is in charge of connecting all the
components of the computer together such as; hard drive,
PSU, RAM, CPU, CD / DVD drive etc…

This could be compared to how the nervous system works
in a human and how it connects all parts of the human
body together.

RAM

RAM

RAM (Random Access Memory) is used to hold programs
and data that are being used. It is much faster for the CPU
to access information from RAM than the hard disk.

When the computer is turned off the information is deleted
and this is what is meant by volatile memory.
